What is pesto sauce? Pesto is a sauce for pasta made with basil, parmesan, pine nuts, and olive oil, invented in northern Italy. The word Pesto means “mashed in a mortar,” and even today, housewives prefer to cook it by hand, rubbing the fragrant basil in the mortar. And it is correct! Even for a salad, it is better not to chop the basil leaves, but to tear them – they will be much more aromatic.
